Coping Plans
Coping plans are a helpful way to remind a child of what they have within their control when something stressful or uncomfortable will be happening. It is also a great way to communicate with staff your child’s preferences in a concrete, written format.
The “Coping Plan for getting a shot” is designed to help your child prepare for an injection by discussing their coping preferences and plan in advance. Fill out this form together and bring it along to help communicate the plan with medical staff, and remind your child what is there to help them.
The “Procedure Coping Plan” is a more extensive coping plan supports if a child is undergoing a longer, more acute, or more frequent treatment. This coping plan not only provides supports in decreasing stress, and increases feelings of control, but also encourages routine for the procedure to support in a child’s decreased feelings of stress and ability to return to calm quickly after.
The “Coping Communication Tool” supports in communicating with staff stressors for a child and what helps during signs of stress. As a caregiver, you know your child best, and this is a way to help those supporting your child to know them too!
